Prairie Pines Quilt Shop was established in 1992 in an old barn north of Scottsbluff, NE. Their beginning inventory was 70 bolts of fabric. Mother Nature decided to upset the apple cart or in this case the barn in 1993 when a tornado swept through the North Platte valley completely destroying the barn and strewing the contents in the nearby fields. With the support of their many friends the original owners decided to try again and the ‘new’ barn was built on the same foundation as it’s predecessor and the business became a wonderful shopping experience for local quilters as well as the many travelers visiting the area.
Early in 2004, the proprietors of the shop decided it was time for another chapter in their lives and they made the decision to either sell the business or close. Along came Darlene and Betty whose initial intention was to join forces and purchase a long arm-quilting machine and start a custom quilting business. With encouragement from the proprietors of Prairie Pines and many quilting friends Darlene and Betty began negotiations to purchase the business to ensure this valuable resource was kept alive in the community. In June of 2004, Darlene and Betty took over ownership of Prairie Pines and a new chapter in their lives began.
Both Darlene and Betty appreciate this wonderful craft of quilting that has been passed down from generation to generation. The fabrics, patterns, techniques and notions that are available in today’s market brings quilt making to a new level of artistic expression and new heirlooms are being made every day to pass on to another generation.
Quilters are wonderful people to be around. They joyfully pass their experience and tips on to the inexperienced. If one was to have their pick of any retail business, owning a quilt shop would have to be at the top of the list because quilters are the nicest customers ever.
